How to charge an electric bike at home

TXED Bikes ·

A useful home charging routine starts with a suitable place and the charger supplied for your bike. Set aside time when you are awake and at home, then follow the connection and disconnection sequence in the instructions for that battery. Keeping the same routine makes it easier to notice a damaged cable, a loose connection or charging behaviour that has changed.

Set up a place you can use every day

Choose a dry location with a stable surface and enough room around the charger and battery. Keep the route out of your home clear. A hallway that doubles as your only exit, or a shared escape route in a block of flats, is a poor charging location. Keep clothing, bags and other combustible materials away from the equipment.

Think about access to the socket as well as access for the bike. If the battery is removable, you can plan its charging location separately from the whole bicycle. Both TXED models have removable batteries. Use the supplied instructions for removal, refitting and locking; carry the battery securely and protect its connections.

Before connecting the charger

  1. Identify the matched equipment. Use the original charger or a replacement authorised for the exact battery. Label chargers if your household owns several electric bikes.
  2. Look over the battery, cable and connections. Damaged equipment, deformation or an unusual smell needs attention before another charge. Keep electrical contacts clean and dry.
  3. Set up the session. Turn the bike off and follow its instructions for the battery position and order of connections. Keep the charger and battery uncovered while charging.

A plug that enters the socket on a battery is only a physical match. The charger also has to suit the battery electrically. An adapter or a larger charger is therefore a separate compatibility decision, rather than a convenient way to speed up this routine.

During and after charging

Remain awake and present, follow the charger's own indicator guidance, and unplug once charging is complete. Plan the session around your day rather than leaving it running while you sleep or leave the house. Follow the specified disconnection sequence and put the charger somewhere dry where its cable will stay undamaged.

Stop using equipment that overheats, deforms, hisses, cracks, smells unusual or smokes. If a battery is smoking or on fire, leave the area, get everyone out and call 999. The government's battery safety guidance explains the warning signs and response.

Make the routine fit your bike

Keep the battery and charger instructions together, with the model name recorded on them. Before a journey, confirm that the battery is correctly fitted and secured. If you need help identifying the charging equipment for a Maverick or Trail, contact TXED Support with your model and clear label photographs.
