How to clean and lubricate an e-bike chain

Clean an e-bike chain when dirt and old lubricant have built up, then apply a suitable bicycle chain lubricant and remove the surplus. The aim is to get lubrication into the moving links while leaving the outside tidy enough to resist collecting more grit. Cleaning also gives you an opportunity to assess the chain's condition.

Choose the tools for the job

A brush, cloths, bicycle-specific degreaser and chain lubricant cover ordinary cleaning. A chain-cleaning device can make it easier to scrub around the links and contain some of the dirty fluid. A chain-wear gauge serves a different purpose: it helps assess wear rather than remove dirt.

Keep drivetrain tools separate from any cloth used near the brakes. Select products for the bicycle and the riding conditions, then follow their application and drying instructions. A general household oil or an aerosol sprayed across the whole transmission is a poor substitute for controlled application to the chain.

Prepare a stable, unpowered bike

Switch the electrical system off and support the bike securely. Follow the bicycle's instructions for handling the drivetrain, including any battery removal. Keep hands, cloths and loose clothing clear of moving parts. Move the chain by hand only through the method permitted for the bicycle; motor assistance is unnecessary for cleaning.

Clean, dry, lubricate

1. Remove surface grime. Use a cloth and drivetrain brush to lift off loose dirt and accumulated lubricant.
2. Clean the links. Apply bicycle degreaser according to its instructions, using a brush or suitable cleaning device. Keep fluid and overspray away from brake pads and rotors.
3. Remove residue and allow drying. Follow the cleaner's instructions so the next product is applied to a suitably prepared chain.
4. Apply chain lubricant carefully. Place it on the links as directed by the lubricant manufacturer and allow the specified time for it to penetrate.
5. Wipe the outside. Remove surplus lubricant with a clean drivetrain cloth rather than leaving a wet outer coating.

Decide what the chain needs next

Use its condition and your riding conditions to set the routine. A gritty or wet ride can require earlier attention than a short dry trip. Inspect the chain rather than relying only on a fixed number of calendar days.

If the chain continues to jump, shifts unpredictably or shows damaged links, the next task is to identify wear or an adjustment problem. More lubricant cannot resolve every transmission fault.
