Front Wheel or Mid Drive E-Bike Conversion Kit: A Fit Guide

TXED Bikes ·

Choose an e-bike conversion kit by the bicycle's mounting interfaces. A front wheel electric bike conversion kit uses the fork, a rear-hub system uses the rear wheel and gears, and a mid drive conversion kit fits around the crank area. Record those interfaces before comparing motor and battery specifications.

Front wheel e-bike conversion kit: start at the fork

Record the fork model and material, axle system, spacing between the dropouts, wheel size and brake type. Ask the kit supplier how the axle is retained and what torque-reaction hardware its installation requires. Check the motor cable route through steering movement.

A front system can leave the existing rear transmission in place, which makes that arrangement worth discussing when retaining an internal-gear hub. It still needs a fork assessment and a wheel that suits the brake and tyre. A conventional 100 mm slotted fork and a through-axle fork are different starting points.

Rear hub conversion kit: include the transmission

In addition to axle spacing and brake fit, identify whether the original rear gears are a cassette or threaded freewheel. Compare the kit's supported gear attachment and the space available for the intended gearing. Note any rear rack, trailer hitch or other equipment using the same area.

Grin's hub-motor compatibility guide documents different slotted and through-axle arrangements, including the wider standards found on fat bikes. Its examples show why an “MTB conversion kit” label is too broad: donor mountain bikes can have different mounting standards.

Mid drive electric bike kit: measure the crank area

Ask the installer to identify the bottom-bracket type, shell dimensions and the space around it. Include the chainstay shape, cable routing and the proposed chainring position. The motor unit and its fittings need a supported installation; the rest of the drivetrain needs to work with the resulting layout.

For example, Bafang's manufacturer workbook publishes different dimension sets and matching components for its M215, M315 and M615 families. Use the drawing and current instructions for the exact kit revision rather than transferring a fit claim from a different model.

Compare two written proposals

Ask each installer to describe the same complete job: donor-bike assessment, exact kit, matched battery and charger, mechanical changes, labour, setup and aftercare. This makes a front-hub proposal comparable with a mid-drive proposal even when their advertised kit prices include different equipment.

  • Which existing wheels, gears and brakes will remain?
  • Which interfaces were measured, and which parts will change?
  • Where will the battery and wiring sit, including access for removal and normal steering?
  • Who supports the complete installation and supplies its instructions?

Government conversion guidance calls for a suitable donor bicycle, compatible components and an appropriately competent installer. For public-road use, confirm the complete finished configuration against the applicable e-bike rules.

If that project scope changes your budget or service preference, revisit conversion versus a complete e-bike. Compare TXED's current complete-bike range with an installer's conversion proposal.

Choosing an electric bike conversion kit for a mountain bike

For an e-bike conversion kit on an MTB, record the frame and fork models, wheel and axle standards, brake arrangement and available battery space. Include suspension movement in the clearance assessment. These details help the supplier compare a front hub, rear hub or mid-drive system for the actual bicycle.

What should a Bafang e-bike kit proposal include?

Ask for the exact motor model and its manufacturer's installation dimensions, together with the specified battery, controller, display and controls. The Bafang examples above have different fitting dimensions, so a brand name alone does not settle the fit. Include the required hardware, cable routing, installation work and post-installation checks in the proposal.

Comparing mid drive e-bike conversion kits

Use the measured bottom-bracket dimensions and frame clearances to narrow the shortlist. Ask the installer to explain the resulting chainline, gearing and battery position. Then compare complete prices and service arrangements for the viable mid drive kits, including the work needed to return the bicycle to use.
