Cycle to Work Scheme Electric Bikes: Eligibility and Cost

TXED Bikes ·

An electric bike can be included in Cycle to Work, but start with your employer's scheme before choosing a model. The useful comparison is the bicycle you can obtain through that scheme, the reduction in take-home pay and the arrangement at the end of the hire period. A monthly figure alone leaves part of the decision unanswered.

Check the employer's scheme first

Ask HR or payroll for the provider, spending limit, application window and participating retailers. Request the written hire and payroll terms before requesting a certificate or ordering a bike. The government's employer overview explains the scheme's purpose and availability conditions.

Find out how a change of employer, unpaid leave or an early departure would affect the remaining agreement. Those questions matter if the commitment lasts longer than your current work arrangement. They are also more useful than assuming every scheme advertised online has the same terms.

Cycle to Work scheme electric bikes: which models qualify?

HMRC includes electrically assisted pedal cycles in the bicycle exemption. The cycle's main use must be qualifying journeys, such as travel to work; recreational use can sit alongside that. HMRC also identifies eligible safety equipment, including helmets, lights and reflective items. Ask the provider which items can be included in your particular order.

A product described as an electric dirt bike or an electric moped is a different purchasing question. Check the exact bicycle specification using our UK electric-bike rules guide before building the scheme request around it.

Compare the full cost, not just the certificate value

Salary sacrifice changes the employment pay arrangement. HMRC's salary-sacrifice guidance states that it cannot reduce cash earnings below the National Minimum Wage and explains possible effects on other earnings-related payments. Have payroll calculate your own take-home-pay change using your pay and scheme terms.

A worksheet to complete with your provider
Figure What to enter
Bike and equipment The accepted quotation, including the exact model and permitted accessories.
Pay reduction The monthly reduction in take-home pay confirmed by payroll, multiplied by the number of months.
Other costs Any delivery, insurance, servicing or equipment cost outside the quotation.
End arrangement The return, extended-use or ownership option and its stated payment.

For an illustrative calculation, if payroll confirms a £60 monthly reduction for 12 months, that part of the cost is £720. If the selected end option costs another £70, the combined figure is £790 before any other costs in the worksheet. Use the written figures for your own offer in this calculation, then compare with buying the same configuration outright.

When do you own the bike?

Do not assume the last payroll deduction transfers ownership. HMRC treats a later ownership transfer separately from the exempt loan or hire; an automatic transfer built into the original agreement is incompatible with that exemption. Read the provider's actual end-of-hire options and include your chosen option in the comparison.

Choosing the best electric bikes on Cycle to Work schemes

For a Cycle to Work e-bike, shortlist bikes by the complete return journey, stairs and storage at both ends, fit, luggage and charging once the scheme is clear. A larger available budget is useful only when the equipment solves a real need. Our commuting guide helps turn those requirements into a practical shortlist.

For a TXED model, ask Contact Us to confirm whether the named scheme and exact order can be accepted before requesting a certificate. Then compare the current TXED commuter range against your commuting requirements.
