Choosing a Bicycle Mirror: Mounting and Rearward View
Choose a bike rear vision mirror from its mounting point outward: first establish where it can attach, then check whether you can see past your arm and luggage from your normal position. A larger mirror can give less useful information than a smaller one with a clear view and the right adjustment.
Bar-end or handlebar clamp?
| Mount | Measurement to collect | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Insert inside the bar end | Internal diameter and usable insertion depth, with the end plug removed according to the handlebar instructions. | Keeps the central handlebar area free, but can increase the width you manoeuvre through doors. |
| Clamp around the handlebar | Outside diameter at the exact mounting point, plus the available straight length. | Position depends on the space left by grips, levers, display brackets and cables. |
| Strap or flexible attachment | The maker's supported mounting shapes, circumference and tightening method. | Convenient to reposition; check that the chosen surface holds the angle during use. |
The inside and outside diameters are different measurements. For example, Zéfal's Spin 25 uses a bar-end insert with a stated 16–22 mm fitting range, can mount on either side and has a folding, adjustable head. Use those measurements to compare the mirror with the actual handlebar on your bicycle.
Check the view before buying
With the bicycle supported, take your usual riding position and ask someone to hold the proposed mirror at its intended location. Wear the jacket and gloves you normally ride in. Look for a useful view behind rather than a reflection dominated by your shoulder or elbow. Repeat with your pannier, basket or other regularly carried luggage fitted.
Compare the adjustment range as well as mirror area. A head that rotates in several directions gives more scope to work around the rider's position, while a folding design can help in narrow storage. Check whether the chosen version is left-specific, right-specific or reversible before ordering.
Include steering and storage in the fit check
- Turn the handlebars fully both ways and operate the brake and gear controls.
- Check cables, a phone mount and any front luggage against the mirror arm.
- Measure the equipped width for your doorway or storage space.
- After installation, confirm that the mounting stays firm and that the head returns to a useful view after folding.
A mirror is useful for checking what is behind as you ride, alongside the observations required before a manoeuvre. Practise reading its view on a quiet familiar route rather than first adjusting it in traffic.
