Child seats and trailers for electric bikes

TXED Bikes ·

Choose a child-carrying setup around the child, the bicycle and the journey together. A rear child seat, a front seat, a trailer and a purpose-built cargo bike use different mounting arrangements and take up different space. Buying the seat first can leave you with equipment that does not fit the bike.

Compare the three practical routes

Ways to plan a family cycle journey
Option Main fit question Everyday planning
Child seat Is the exact seat approved for this frame or rack and this child? Mounting and dismounting, loading the child and retaining room to pedal and steer.
Cycle trailer Are the bicycle, axle and hitch compatible with the trailer? Extra length and width, gates, turns, storage and loading at each end.
Cargo cycle Does the complete model support the intended passenger setup? Access at home, the fitted passenger equipment and all intended luggage.

For a child seat, match the actual mounting version

Thule's child-seat guide distinguishes frame, rack and front-mounted products. A shared brand or similar product name does not mean the mounting versions are interchangeable. Confirm the attachment measurements and the required rack standard or frame shape for the exact seat.

Use that seat's age, development, weight and height requirements. Thule advises speaking to a paediatrician before using a seat for a child under one year old. A child must also meet the product's sitting and head-support requirements; age by itself is not a complete suitability test.

For a trailer, plan the space as well as the hitch

Measure the narrowest entrance on the route and the space where you will park. Include the trailer in your turning plan. Ask the bicycle and trailer suppliers to confirm the axle/hitch combination, the permitted towing use and the load limits. Add the child's essentials to the load plan before deciding what storage capacity is needed.

Keep the limits separate

A bicycle's total-load figure does not establish the capacity of a rack, child seat or hitch. Record each applicable limit and what its definition includes. The rider, child, equipment and luggage all need to fit the approved complete arrangement.

The Maverick's long saddle does not itself approve an additional passenger. We have not confirmed a child-seat or trailer installation for either TXED UK model here. For a proposed setup, send the exact product and bicycle details to TXED Support before purchasing the attachment.

Prepare the first journey

Fit and inspect the equipment according to its instructions. Practise handling the approved setup in a quiet permitted space before the family trip. Choose an easy route with time to stop, and make a plan for securely parking while helping the child in or out. The best starting point is a manageable complete journey, with the correct equipment already confirmed.
